Do you work too much? Is your head always busy? Do you sometimes have the sense that life is passing you by? If so, this is for you.
Hi, I'm Andrew. I'm a coach and the author of 'The Overthinker's Guide to Life.' I'm also an ex-advertising creative.
'The Enchanted Forest' was inspired by a video I reposted on LinkedIn of Gabor Maté talking about his life regrets.
Looking back from the age of 80, he says he missed out on a lot of what really matters - joy, play, spending time with his family - because he spent too much time working. He thought he had to work to justify his existence.
This post resonated with a lot of people! You can watch the video here:
I love Gabor's wisdom and humanity. And I can also relate to his story.
Back in my advertising days, I was either always working or thinking about work. I was less present for my family, constantly stressed, and felt like life was something I had to get through, rather than something I could also enjoy and appreciate. Does this resonate with you?
These years of chronic stress took their toll. Last year, I was diagnosed with heart disease that now requires me to take a daily statin and aspirin. Thankfully, it was identified at the mild stage, so I haven't had to have any major surgery or anything.
But, still, it was a massive shock. I'm not someone who smokes or drinks loads. I don't have a history of heart disease in my family. My strong hunch is that spending 20 years in a career I found stressful was a significant factor in this diagnosis.
What made it worse was that I was good at internalising my stress. From the outside, it looked like I was fine. But on the inside, it was a different story.
Lately, I've been learning to relax and make peace with my busy mind (meditation has really helped me with this). I also take more time to appreciate life - to get out into nature, to be there for my family, to take myself less seriously.
I always thought I had to do something special in the world of work to justify my existence. Now, I know this isn't true. It was a story I learned as a kid that became part of my conditioned identity.
The question is, what's your work story? And is it leading to a life that's squeezing out joy, play and the things that really matter?
What can you expect from this session?
I've taken the core idea of 'The Enchanted Forest' and created a map that shows you how to move towards experiencing more joy and play in your life. It's also perfect for making sure you focus on what matters most. This map is fun and playful in itself. But don't underestimate its child-like demeanour. It's also a powerful change agent, allowing you to uncover fresh insights and build new, fulfilling habits and rituals.
In this taster session, I'll give you an overview of the map and show you a trusted tool to help you start exploring on your own. I'll also point out where you're most likely to get stuck and lost, and how to find your way again.
There are the three main lands you'll need to become familiar with in this new world of change:
- The Purgatory of Grind: this is my name for your busy, daily routine. It's the feeling that you have a never-ending to-do list, that life is all work and no play
- The Quicksand: This is inside your own head. It's the thoughts and worries that drag you down and keep you awake at night
- The Enchanted Forest: This is obviously where you're trying to get to. Here, you're in touch the young part of you that loves to play and have fun. You're still a grown up, but you can also take yourself less seriously and make room for the things that matter most to you in life. Joy is a daily occurence.
PLUS,
- I'll tell you more about what you can expect from The Enchanted Forest, my new, four-week online programme. Launching in May, this will be available both as a group programme and one-to-one coaching, . I've done my best to make it affordable. I want as many people as possible to benefit from it.
